Next, we saw Helensburgh RNLI launch to rescue a kayaker who had been in the water for an hour before being spotted by a passing fishing boat. The crew of the fishing boat had tried to pull the kayaker onboard, but couldn’t, and the kayaker’s buoyancy aid had fallen off. The crew at Newhaven use their Y-boat to reach a sailor in trouble

RNLI/Newhaven

A sailor makes a mayday call – and the Newhaven crew spring into action

When a sailor onboard a yacht struggled with a dragging anchor and machinery failure, and was in imminent danger of running aground, they were forced to make a mayday call. Once the Newhaven RNLI crew spotted the struggling yacht, they deployed their small inflatable Y-boat – but couldn’t get close enough in the rough surf. They waited nearby until a helicopter arrived to winch the sailor to safety.
