Baltimore: Winched to safety
The episode began with the RNLI crew at Baltimore heading to an upturned catamaran, 70 miles out to sea. The Tamar class lifeboat powered to the scene, alongside Coast Guard helicopters, and quickly recovered the skipper, who was then airlifted to hospital.
Helensburgh: A lucky escape
Next, we saw Helensburgh RNLI launch to rescue a kayaker who had been in the water for an hour before being spotted by a passing fishing boat. The crew of the fishing boat had tried to pull the kayaker onboard, but couldn’t, and the kayaker’s buoyancy aid had fallen off. A fisherman managed to hold onto the kayaker, who was balancing on the boat’s stern trim, until the Helensburgh crew arrived to rescue him.
Moelfre: Medical emergency
We also saw Moelfre RNLI called to a challenging medical evacuation after a fisherman had fallen and become badly injured. The lifeboat volunteers gave the man pain relief, treated his injuries and transferred him to an evacuation stretcher, before safely handing him into the care of ambulance paramedics.
Newhaven: Mayday!
When a sailor onboard a yacht struggled with a dragging anchor and machinery failure, and was in imminent danger of running aground, they were forced to make a mayday call. Once the Newhaven RNLI crew spotted the struggling yacht, they deployed their small inflatable Y-boat – but couldn’t get close enough in the rough surf. They waited nearby until a helicopter arrived to winch the sailor to safety.
