Lifeguards and beaches
Across the UK and Channel Islands, RNLI lifeguards help keep people visiting the beach safe. If you’re heading to the coast, choose a lifeguarded beach.
RNLI lifeguards have been patrolling beaches since 2001. They share safety advice, provide first aid to those who need it, and save the lives of those who get in trouble in the water.
Their proactive approach is shown by the number of preventative actions they carry out each year. In 2023, they carried out almost 3M (2,989,928) preventative actions. In addition, they attended 14,213 incidents, helped 19,979 people, and saved 86 lives.
Lifeguard training
Before a lifeguard sets foot on a beach, they take part in months of training. From a rigorous fitness test to learning vital casualty care skills, it takes a lot of hard work, dedication and commitment in order to save lives at the beach.
