Meet the next #RNLITopDog Buddy!
Buddy the cockapoo is helping the RNLI to remind dog owners to enjoy their time at the coast but to remember to stay safe at the same time.
The RNLI, with Buddy’s help, is advising that if you are planning to walk your dog at the coast, always check the tide times and weather conditions before setting off. The RNLI also suggests that you always carry a means of calling for help and to keep it protected and attached to you at all times.
RNLI lifeguards at Godrevy in Cornwall were alerted by a member of the public that her Golden Labrador had fallen over the cliff on Saturday (11 August). RNLI lifeguard Fynley Caudery was able to reach the dog which was stuck on the cliff and reassure it until assistance from HM Coastguard Portreath Cliff Rescue Team arrived. Members of the coastguard along with Fynley helped the dog back to safety on the beach where it was reunited with its owner.
Ollie Shilston, RNLI lifeguard supervisor for the area, said:
‘The owner of the dog here acted exactly how we advise and, instead of trying to reach her dog herself, alerted the lifeguards for assistance which meant we could get back up from the local coastguard volunteers.
Like Buddy suggests, we advise that you check the weather conditions before you set off on a walk. The poor weather here at Godrevy on Saturday may have been a factor in this dog’s fall.'
Buddy is the second pooch to be featured in the #RNLITopDog campaign. Dash, Buddy and Louie (whose picture will be revealed in the coming weeks) were chosen as the RNLI’s Top Dogs through a campaign that ran at the Royal Cornwall Show.
