RNLI - 911 Challenge - Stop 77- Tighnabruaich Lifeboat Station

Belinda & James Richardson a young (at heart) retired couple from London have been fervent supporters of the RNLI since owning an inflatable on the Thames over 20 years ago. They also have had a passion for owning a Porsche 911 for more than 50 years! We wanted to put something back into society by supporting a truly worthy cause such as the RNLI.

We are always at our happiest when visiting the British Isles coastline – come sun, wind, or storm!

A large crowd of crew, volunteers, and locals turned up on the day to welcome the tour car. Chairman of RNLI Lifeboat Station, Kerry MacGill welcomed Belinda and James to the station and presented them with a memorial Kyles of Bute Shinty ball. He commented the weather was kind to the tour and he thanked the enthusiastic couple for their generosity and original fund raising initiative.

The RNLI charity saves lives at sea. Its volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue service around the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland coasts. The RNLI operates over 230 lifeboat stations in the UK and Ireland and has more than 100 lifeguard units on beaches around the UK. The RNLI is independent of Coastguard and government and depends on voluntary donations and legacies to maintain its rescue service. Since the RNLI was founded in 1824 its lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved over 137,000 lives. The RNLI is a charity registered in England, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland.

Tighnabruaich Lifeboat Station has 13 crew, made up of local villagers, a father and 3 sons and has boasted a local couple as part of their volunteers.

The lifeboat is an Atlantic 85 Inshore Boat named the James and Helen Mason and covers the Kyles of Bute and Loch Fyne, and launches at all states of the tide and in any weather to assist people and vessels in distress. The boat has just returned from a major refit and the crew have just completed in depth training in the handling of the new installations on the refitted boat.

Tighnabruaich RNLI is also hoping to recruit extra people to help in its lifeboat station shops and to volunteer as fundraisers.
