VE Day Cake Stall raising funds for RNLI Mablethorpe
Even though all RNLI fundraising events are cancelled at present due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, the Anderby Creek Community Charity is still doing its bit for the RNLI, with a garden cake stall to help locals hold their own VE Day celebrations..
Over the last 27 or so years, the Anderby Creek Community Group have raised in the region of £90,000 for the RNLI in Mablethorpe. In 2019 alone the total sum raised was over £8000.
The group have been disappointed that they have been unable to hold their usual annual events so far in 2020. However, an enterprising member of the group, Julie Lake, has decided to hold a cake stall on VE Day, Friday 8 May, outside of her garden for the local residents of the small hamlet of Anderby Creek, with an honesty box for donations to RNLI Mablethorpe.
The cake stall is a regular favourite at all the group’s fundraising events and is run as a family affair with Julie’s mum, aunt and grandson all helping to make it a huge success. Last year Julie’s cake stalls alone raised over £800 at various events throughout the year. This year the group had planned a VE Day celebration to raise funds and Julie would have had her cake stand at that event too.
The plan is that local residents can collect an assortment of cakes for their afternoon teas, when they are out on their essential exercise whilst observing the current social distancing rules and in exchange for a donation.
Julie said: ‘With our planned fundraising events for the RNLI either cancelled or postponed in the village in 2020, it is important that we try to continue to support this fantastic charity.’
As with any charity and in particular during the difficult times we are all facing at present, the RNLI is dependant on the efforts of those who tirelessly work to support the institution and its volunteer crews, not only the volunteer fundraisers within the organisation but those who support the RNLI from outside. The month of May normally sees the RNLI’s annual Mayday fundraising campaign, however this year this vital event in the RNLI calendar has had to be taken on line due to the pandemic.

Fundraising efforts such as this demonstrate the commitment to ourselves that the local community has. The kindness and generosity of our fundraisers goes towards training and equipping our crew to enable us to continue our mission to save lives at sea.’
