West Mersea RNLI receives large donation from female rowing club

The Basin Oars are a community rowing club based in Heybridge Basin. Consisting of an entirely female crew and committee, the club regularly hosts events raising much needed funds for the RNLI. The astonishing amount of money was raised through their 200 club as sadly, like many other events, they have had to cancel their usual fundraising activities because of the pandemic.

Accepting the cheque on behalf of the crew, West Mersey RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager Rick Boreham said: ‘It is a great honour to receive this substantial donation. Throughout the last year much of our fundraising has been put on hold. To have such community minded groups like The Basin Oars donate to us is a testament to how valued the RNLI is around the coast’.

Lifeboat Press Officer Chris Lewis-Garnham added: ‘This Summer is expected to be a busy one, both locally and nationally, as more people stay in Britain this Summer. This donation, like all donations, will enable our volunteers to be fully equipped to continue to save lives at sea.’

The RNLI charity saves lives at sea. Its volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue service around the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland coasts.
