Kippford RNLI Assist Stranded Walkers
The volunteer crew at Kippford RNLI were requested to launch by the Coastguard at 5.05pm on Monday 16th August 2021 to reports of a group of walkers cut off by the tide at Rough Island.
D-854 ‘Ronnie Sinclair’ headed for Rough Island and arrived on scene very quickly. The family group had sensibly retreated further up the beach awaiting assistance and were safe and unhurt. All 4 casualties plus their dog were helped into the lifeboat and the crew made a steady return to Kippford. The casualties expressed their gratitude for the assistance.
Gareth Jones, Lifeboat Operations Manager at Kippford said “The family had been aware that the island causeway was tidal but unfortunately had misjudged the speed of the incoming tide. They did exactly the right thing by calling for help rather than try to make their way to shore unaided. We would also recommend that people are aware of the local tide times when visiting the Solway Coast and carry a means to call for help if required.”
The Kippford lifeboat was refuelled and made ready for service.
