Fenit RNLI lifeboats respond to call of upturned kayaks sighted near Banna Beach
The volunteer crew of Fenit RNLI responded to a call for assistance by Valentia Coast Guard at approximately 1pm yesterday (Sunday 21 February) when reports were received that two upturned kayaks had been seen in the Banna Strand area.
Fenit RNLI launched both its all-weather lifeboat and its inshore lifeboat with a full crew onboard both vessels.
Upon arrival at the scene of the reported sighting, the Coast Guard advised Fenit RNLI that all people were safe and accounted for at that time. It is understood that the kayaks washed ashore shortly thereafter.
Speaking following the call out, Jackie Murphy, Fenit RNLI Lifeboat Press Officer said: ‘Our volunteer team here in Fenit RNLI were delighted that there was a safe and positive outcome for all concerned. As always this is an opportunity to remind all users of the sea to be as prepared as possible when going out or taking part in any activity, even of a day when the sea in the area appears so calm as weather conditions were good at the time.
‘The RNLI is a 24/7 365 day a year search and rescue service. We always encourage people to be familiar with the emergency services numbers of 999 or 112. If you get into difficulty or see someone in trouble, dial one of those numbers and ask for the Coast Guard.’
