Silloth RNLI lifeboat was called out on Sunday 18 July to a swimmer that was spotted off the coast of Silloth.

Members of the public had expressed their concern for the safety of the person. The lifeboat was launched from West Beach due to the state of the tide.

Silloth lifeboat crew made contact with the swimmer, who had swum from Scotland and intended to swim back to Caerlaverock Castle, Scotland. The tide in the Solway Firth is particularly strong and unpredictable and Silloth RNLI lifeboat crew were concerned for the swimmers safety and consequently decided to escort him back as far as possible. The swimmer was safe and well and consequently the lifeboat returned to station and was made ready for service again by 5:35pm.
