Lochinver RNLI receives generous donation from local business
Local businessman, Alisdair Young, presented Lochinver RNLI Lifeboat Station with a donation of £600 on Monday 1 August 2022. This donation is equivalent to the cost of a specially designed lifejacket, worn as an essential part of the crew’s kit when saving lives at sea.
Alisdair and his business partner, Calum Macleod, both have a long history of visiting one of the local beaches, Achmelvich, just north of Lochinver. Recognising the growing popularity of the NC 500 motoring route, they identified an opportunity to establish their glamping holiday business, North Coast 500 Pods, creating a facility for others to enjoy the beauty of the area. Their guests are presented with an option to donate to charity at the time of booking, which Alisdair and Calum have then matched when making their donation.
When asked why he chose the RNLI, Alisdair said: “I picked the RNLI as a charity to support mainly because it is local and so many people in the area are involved and supported by the lifeboat service. Luckily, I’ve never needed to be rescued but we are all very glad the service exists and is so close by.”
Keeping their volunteer crew members safe when out at sea is of paramount importance to the RNLI but the cost of the kit is significant, at almost £2,500 per crew member. The RNLI is a charity and relies entirely upon the generosity of its supporters to enable it to continue its life saving activities.
