Union Hall RNLI come to aid of three people on yacht in Glandore Harbour
Union Hall RNLI volunteers launched their inshore lifeboat to go to the aid of three people on a yacht in Glandore harbour, in County Cork yesterday morning (Wednesday 27 July)..
The alarm was raised by a phone call from a member of the public to the on call Union Hall RNLI Deputy Launching Authority, to say a yacht was in difficulty at the outer Dangers in Glandore harbour. Valentia Coast Guard then requested the volunteer crew to launch their inshore Atlantic 85 lifeboat Christine and Raymond Fielding at 8.55am.
The lifeboat helmed by Tim Forde with crew Charlie Deasy, Stephen Hurley and Killian O’Kelly (also RNLI Water Safety Education Manager and a helm at Bundoran RNLI), launched at 9.10am, in flat calm sea conditions.
Once on scene, an assessment was carried out by the crew and due to the yacht being aground, two people were taken onto the lifeboat, while one remained aboard.
A decision was made to wait to later in the afternoon to refloat the vessel and at 1.30pm, Helm Tim Forde and crew member Chris Collins and Riona Casey returned to the vessel to assist in re-floating. The yacht was afloat at 2.10pm and left at at the safety of the nearest safe port, a mooring in Glandore at 2.25pm.
Following the call out, John Kelleher, Union Hall RNLI Lifeboat Operations Manager said: ‘It is always advisable to call the Coast Guard on 999 or 112 if you see someone in trouble on or near the water, if out on the water, wear a lifejacket, carry a means of communication, and wear suitable clothing for your chosen activity.'
