Members of Lerwick Ladies Lifeboat Guild and RNLI Aith lifeboat crew have received RNLI Long Service Awards

Lerwick Ladies Lifeboat Guild volunteers Rhoda Watt, Linda Simpson, both Joint Chairs as well as Treasurer and Souvenir Secretary respectively, received their 20-year Long Service Awards on Sunday.

RNLI Aith crew member Ivor Moffat received his 30-year Long Service Award, with fellow crew Jimmy Nicolson who received his 20-year Long Service Award.

The awards, which feature an image of RNLI founder, Sir William Hillary, were presented at a special RNLI garden party recognising the contribution of long serving volunteers at Hopetoun House, near South Queensferry.
 
Although unable to attend the garden party, Lerwick Ladies Lifeboat Guild members Georgia Grant and Hazel Anderson were each also recognised with 20-year and 30-year Long Service Awards respectively. From RNLI Aith, Raymond Clark and George Morrison have also both been recognised with 20-year Long Service Awards. Station mechanic at RNLI Lerwick, Ian Harms has also achieved his 20-year Long Service Award.

Malcolm Craigie, Lifeboat Operations Manager at RNLI Lerwick said: “I’d like to say well done to all those recipients of Long Service Awards for their many years of service to the RNLI in Aith and Lerwick. The Guild raises tens of thousands of pounds each year through organising fundraising events and running the RNLI Lerwick Lifeboat Shop; and we depend on the commitment of our crew to respond to a request to launch whenever we’re needed. We’re grateful for all their collective efforts which help us to save lives at sea.”

Key facts about the RNLI

The RNLI charity saves lives at sea. Its volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue service around the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland coasts. The RNLI operates 238 lifeboat stations in the UK and Ireland and more than 240 lifeguard units on beaches around the UK and Channel Islands. The RNLI is independent of Coastguard and government and depends on voluntary donations and legacies to maintain its rescue service. Since the RNLI was founded in 1824, its lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved over 142,700 lives.
