Newhaven RNLI in multi-agency search near Brighton Palace Pier
Lifeboats News Release
Newhaven Lifeboat was tasked by HM Coastguard at 4pm on Wednesday 12 April to assist in a multi-agency search for a person in the water near Palace Pier in Brighton.
Newhaven’s Severn class lifeboat David and Elizabeth Acland proceeded to the given location along with the also tasked Shoreham RNLI, Coastguard Rescue Teams, HM Coastguard rescue helicopter 175 and local Police.
Witnesses raised the alarm reporting concern that a person had entered the water just west of Brighton’s Palace Pier.
Lee Blacknell, Volunteer Coxswain, says: ‘These are very difficult search conditions. Our priority is to work vigilantly through each search pattern. The sea state was perilous for anyone entering the water.’
At 10.30pm the search was suspended in deteriorating weather and visibility. At first light on Thursday 13 April the multi-agency search was resumed. Newhaven Lifeboat undertook a new search pattern until 8.30am when the search was stood down.
‘Our volunteer crew worked tirelessly throughout, alongside our partners at Shoreham RNLI and Coastguard teams. But now, our thoughts rest with the loved ones of the subject of our search.’
