Walton and Frinton RNLI assist lone sailor

The five metre yacht was unable to make progress in fresh winds and the lone occupant was unsure of his exact position so had dropped anchor and called for assistance.

Once in communication with the vessel the lifeboat was able to establish that the yacht was only within a couple of miles of the end of Walton Pier and quickly reached their position.

After transferring a crew member to the vessel and placing the yachtsman on the lifeboat for welfare checks, lifeboat coxswain Simon Berry assessed the situation and it was decided that the best and safest course of action was to tow the vessel to the nearest safe harbour in Walton Backwaters.

The vessel was made ready for towing and the lifeboat crew member recovered to the lifeboat.

Reaching Titchmarsh Marina at approx 6pm, the lifeboat crew moored up the yacht and the grateful sailor was put safely ashore.

The all-weather lifeboat was made ready for service again shortly afterwards and the crew were able to enjoy their evening.
