Workington RNLI help rowing boat in distress

Workington RNLI was called out to a rowing boat in distress off the west coast last night.

The two-man crew were out in the Irish Sea trialling the specially-made seven metre boat for a forthcoming Atlantic crossing challenge, when they became aware of issues with the rudder. It had become stuck and the crew called the Coastguard for assistance.

Workington RNLI's volunteer crew launched the all-weather lifeboat Dorothy May White at 11.25pm on August 17.
The rowing boat was two miles off the coast of Workington and the crew towed it back to harbour.

The RNLI charity saves lives at sea. Its volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue service around the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland coasts. The RNLI operates 238 lifeboat stations in the UK and Ireland and more than 240 lifeguard units on beaches around the UK and Channel Islands. The RNLI is independent of Coastguard and government and depends on voluntary donations and legacies to maintain its rescue service. Since the RNLI was founded in 1824, its lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved over 142,700 lives.
