Flamborough RNLI lifeboat crew strengthened with new helmsman

Flamborough RNLI volunteer crew member Matthew Emmerson has completed training to be become the stations latest helmsman.

Matthew Emmerson following practical assessment
Matthew, who has been a voluntary crew member at Flamborough RNLI for 13 years successfully undertook written and practical assessments on Monday to become Helmsman of the Stations RNLI B class Atlantic 85 lifeboat 'Elizabeth Jane Palmer'.

The training required to become a Helmsman of the RNLI B class Atlantic 85 lifeboat is extensive. The knowledge and skills needed to fulfil the role have been honed through attending courses at the RNLI college in Poole combined with regular station based training and assessments. Modules have included, search and rescue, boat handling, navigation and casualty care, Competence at each stage of Matthews training including his final pass out was checked by an assessor to whom he was required to demonstrate his knowledge and practical skills.

Flamborough Lifeboat Operations Manager David Freeman said 'The training requires a considerable amount of work and commitment. After giving many years of service as a crew member Matthew has an abundance of experience and it's good to see him progress to helmsman. We wish him all the best in his new role.'

Matthew said 'it feels good to have finally qualified as helmsman, I look forward to giving many more years service to Flamborough RNLI in my new role.'

The RNLI charity saves lives at sea. Its volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue service around the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland coasts. The RNLI operates 238 lifeboat stations in the UK and Ireland and more than 240 lifeguard units on beaches around the UK and Channel Islands. The RNLI is independent of Coastguard and government and depends on voluntary donations and legacies to maintain its rescue service. Since the RNLI was founded in 1824, its lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved over 142,700 lives.
