RNLI Moelfre Lifeboat Launched in Heavy Sea to Assist Charity Rowers.

Lifeboats News Release

Sunday, 23 July 2023, at 8:04 pm, the RNLI Moelfre volunteers launched the all-weather lifeboat ‘Kiwi’ after being tasked by H.M. Coastguard that an ocean-going seven-meter rowing boat had got into difficulties fifteen miles north of Amlwch.

The rowing boat was heading for the Isle of Man, but the rough seas had proved incredibly challenging for the two-man crew.

Despite heavy seas, the lifeboat made good headway to the casualty vessel's location. Once on scene, it proved difficult for the lifeboat crew to attach a tow to the casualty vessel due to the three-meter swell and how low the towing cleat was on the casualty vessel.

Once the tow had been secured and both crew members reported that they were happy to stay onboard the casualty vessel while under tow to the sheltered port at Porth Amlwch.

Cemaes Coastguard Team were at Amlwch to assist in lighting up danger points and to assist in making the rowing boat secure.

The rowing boat crew were well-equipped and did not require any medical assistance.
Kiwi was back on slip at 12:24 am to be made ready for her next call to service.

Earlier in the day, there was another shout when a broken-down speedboat needed towing to Traeth Bychan. The crew of the powerboat were given some additional safety advice by the RNLI inshore lifeboat crew and Moelfre coastguard team who were assisting onshore. .
