Flamborough RNLI lifeboat crew member qualifies as helmsman
Flamborough RNLI volunteer crew member Karl Price completes training to become the stations latest helmsman
During his 5 years as a member of the crew Karl has undertaken extensive training training to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to fulfil the role. Training has consisted of attending courses at the RNLI college in Poole combined with station based training and assessments. Modules have included , search and rescue, navigation and casualty care. Competence at each stage was assessed when he was required to demonstrate his knowledge and practical skills as well as leadership qualities.
Flamborough Lifeboat Operations Manager David Freeman said 'The training process requires a considerable amount of commitment and hard work. During his time as volunteer crew member Karl has shown all the qualities needed as a helmsman, it's been good to watch his progress and we all wish him the best in his new role.'
Karl said 'I thoroughly enjoy the training and I am looking forward to the new role as helmsman. I also enjoy participating in the training of junior crew members and seeing individuals progress.'

The RNLI charity saves lives at sea. Its volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue service around the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland coasts. The RNLI operates 238 lifeboat stations in the UK and Ireland and more than 240 lifeguard units on beaches around the UK and Channel Islands. The RNLI is independent of Coastguard and government and depends on voluntary donations and legacies to maintain its rescue service. Since the RNLI was founded in 1824, its lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved over 142,700 lives.
