Shortly after 7.30pm Dublin Coast Guard received a 999 call reporting that a car had rolled off the slipway in Skerries and that there was a person in the water in the car.

The volunteers in Skerries RNLI were paged, along with their colleagues in Skerries Fire Brigade.

Soon after arriving at the station the volunteer crew learned that an off-duty firefighter had helped the man out of the car. The man was brought into the lifeboat station to be assessed for first aid. As he was cold and shocked from the ordeal, an ambulance was requested as a precaution.

In the meantime, lifeboat crew had donned their personal protective equipment and entered the water to check the car and confirm that there were no other passengers.

Skerries Fire Brigade arrived on station and assisted the man until the ambulance arrived and he was transferred to hospital for further checks.

Members of An Garda Siochana and the Coast Guard Rescue Helicopter R116 also responded.

Speaking about the call out, volunteer Lifeboat Press Officer for Skerries RNLI, Gerry Canning said: ‘This was a great example of the emergency services community all working together seamlessly. We’d also like to acknowledge the swift actions of the proprietor and staff of Storm in A Tea Cup in raising the alarm, and the off-duty firefighter who helped the man from the car. They played a vital role in ensuring a tragedy was avoided.’
