Silloth RNLI launched on service
Silloth RNLI Lifeboat was requested to launch by HM Coastguard at 4.54pm on Monday 6 November 2023 to search the area between Powfoot and Eastriggs due to signals being sent from a Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon.
HM Coastguard had received two signals from the EPIRB (Emergency Position Iindicating Radio Beacon) between Powfoot and Eastriggs and requested a search of the area. With a flooding tide, Silloth RNLI volunteers launched the Atlantic 85 lifeboat and was quickly joined on scene by Coastguard Helicopter R936 to search the area.
After an extensive search, no further signals from the EPIRB were detected and nothing found on the water. Both Silloth RNLI Lifeboat and Rescue Helicopter 936 were stood down by HM Coastguard.
Stewart Henderson, Helmsman for Silloth RNLI Lifeboat, used his knowledge and training to bring the RNLI Lifeboat and volunteer crew safely home in complete darkness, navigating the constantly changing sand banks in worsening sea conditions.
Silloth Lifeboat returned to station at 7pm where it was washed down and refuelled, ready for service again.
