Poole RNLI assist 30ft grounded motorboat taking on water

Lifeboats News Release

Poole lifeboat was requested to launch by UK Coastguard just after 3.30pm (Saturday November 25) to a 30ft motorboat that had found itself aground earlier in the day on Stoney Island. Stoney Island is a hard shingle bank just inside the entrance of the harbour.

The vessel had been aground for some time and the skipper had been happy to wait for the tide to come back, conditions out in the harbour were bright, but it was chilly with a cold north westerly breeze. As the tide came back, water had begun to enter the vessel over the stern of the boat, which concerned the skipper who then asked for some assistance.

The lifeboat volunteers launched and were soon on scene, two crew members were transferred onboard, they found some water on board the vessel and the boats’ pumps were running. The volunteers walked out and deployed the anchor as the tide was flooding, within 30 minutes or so the vessel had re-floated. The lifeboat crew checked things were okay on-board and that there was no water coming in from underneath. As the tide came back, the anchor was recovered, the vessel was free and the lifeboat escorted it safely to the back of Stoney Island, into deeper water.

Once all was safe and well, the lifeboat returned to station, refuelled, warmed up as the temperature was very cold when the sun went down, the lifeboat was ready for service by 5pm.

This was the 148th call out for the Poole Lifeboat volunteers this year.
