Wicklow RNLI Inshore lifeboat launched to aid foil surfers
Two foil surfers were brought to safety by Wicklow RNLI Inshore lifeboat on Saturday afternoon (30 September), following a Coast Guard pager alert.
The Inshore lifeboat launched just after 3:40pm and located the two surfers a short time later at the entrance to Wicklow harbour, they were having difficulties getting back to the shore due to tidal conditions.
Weather conditions at the time were sea state slight with south westerly wind force 3/4.Visibility was poor with mist and rain. The surfers and their foil boards were taken onto the lifeboat. One surfer was exhausted while paddling ashore against the falling tide, he was checked over by the crew and did not require any medical assistance.
The two surfers were landed safely ashore, and the lifeboat crew returned to station. The call out marked the first official ‘Shout’ for trainee Deirdre Rizo.
Speaking about the call out, Lifeboat Press Officer, Tommy Dover said: ‘Our trainee crew have put in a lot of time and effort over the past year training as lifeboat volunteers, and today Deirdre was able to put training into practice and go to sea as part of a RNLI crew.’
When going afloat we would remind everyone to check their engine and fuel, always wear a lifejacket or buoyancy aid, and carry a means of calling for help. If you see someone in difficulty on or near the water, dial 999 and ask for the Coast Guard.
