Sennen Cove RNLI volunteers launch to injured person at Pedn Vounder.
A call was received from HM Coastguard Falmouth at 6.50pm on Monday 9 October following reports of a lady with a leg injury at Pedn Vounder Beach.
The Lands End Coastguard search and rescue team were also tasked was also tasked to the incident.
The D class inshore lifeboat (ILB) Amy Brown quickly launched with a total of three RNLI volunteers under the command of Kirstan Gorvin and the Tamar class all-weather lifeboat City of London III launched, with seven RNLI volunteers, under the command of Coxswain Ollie George.
Both lifeboats arrived on scene at 7.18pm where the casualty was being assisted by two members of the public who were kindly willing to provide any help and support that they could.
Two RNLI volunteers were placed ashore by the inshore lifeboat to assess the casualty. Following discussions with Lands End Coastguard search and rescue team and the casualty it was decided that the easiest and safest way to extract the lady was by sea.
Around 7.40pm, casualty was placed in the inshore lifeboat with one of her companions and taken out to sea where they were transferred to the all-weather lifeboat into the safe hands of RNLI volunteer Dr Richard Cheyne who provided casualty care.
Both lifeboats returned to station, were recovered around 8.05pm and made ready for their next service call.
The casualty was made comfortable in the lifeboat station until her companion’s partner arrived to take her to hospital for further assessment.
This service was particularly notable for a number of reasons.
It was the first time in our station’s history that our inshore lifeboat was entirely crewed by members of one family. RNLI volunteer helm Kirstan Gorvin was joined by his son Tristan and daughter Tamsyn. They are both a great asset to our volunteer crew as they are also RNLI lifeguards. The family’s commitment to local search and rescue doesn’t stop there as Kirstan’s wife Naomi is a member of the Lands End Coastguard search and rescue team.
This service was also the first all-weather lifeboat shout for RNLI volunteers Paul Rimmer and Dr Richard Cheyne.
It was also the first service launch at Sennen Cove for our duty mechanic Paul Gamble. When required, Paul, a highly experienced member of the RNLI from Fowey, has provided cover at our lifeboat station on many occasions over the years, but this was his first service launch from Sennen Cove. It was great to have him aboard.
