Port St Mary RNLI launch to 35 foot yacht
Port St Mary RNLI were requested to launch at 6:32am yesterday morning (Thursday 12 October) to assist a 35 foot yacht in difficulty.
HM Coastguard tasked Port St Mary RNLI volunteers to launch the all-weather lifeboat Gough Ritchie II to a 35-foot yacht with two crew onboard, situated some four miles East of Langness that had been suffering propulsion issues since 3:30am.
The volunteer crew were paged at 6:35am and launched at 6:50am into a calm sea and a South West wind of force 2 to 3. The lifeboat crew were on scene at 7:27am and having established that the crewmen on the yacht were not injured, they were advised that the casualty vessel no longer required assistance and were proceeding to Whitehaven.
The all-weather lifeboat returned to Port St Mary arriving back in port at 8.10am without incident and was then washed down, refuelled and made ready for the next service at 8:15pm.
Coxswain Morgan Guy commented that the yachtsman had acted correctly to requesting help before a serious incident arose, and emphasised the need for all vessels to carry a suitable means of calling for assistance.
