The Pagers went off at 11:06am and Southwold relief lifeboat Edna May was tasked for an immediate launch to an initial report of two people in the water off Walberswick beach, one being a 10-year-old girl.

As the lifeboat was launching into the river, the fishing vessel Laura K, which was already in the water, steamed out of the harbour and went to the aid of the swimmers. When the lifeboat arrived on scene the crew of the Laura K were in the process of recovering the young girl with their life ring; the other swimmer had made their way safely ashore.

The lifeboat crew took over the recovery and brought the young swimmer back to the lifeboat station and performed a medical assessment, before reuniting her with her family.

Southwold RNLI Helm, Bob Cooper, said: 'Our thanks goes out to the captain and crew of the Laura K, whose timely response and quick actions with their man over board equipment, no doubt assured a good outcome.'

The RNLI is a charity that relies almost entirely on voluntary contributions and the efforts of thousands of volunteer lifeboat crew members and fundraisers. For tips and advice on beach safety, visit https://rnli.org/safety/beach-safety
