Surf Bererk podcast recorded at North Bay, Scarborough

Dexter’s surf shop partnered with Scarborough RNLI on Sunday 14 April 2024 for the latest episode of Surf Berserk, their podcast series available on Spotify.

With a backdrop of a beautiful sunny spring day in North Bay Scarborough, they had a great 42-minute chat about Huggy's 20 years' experience of saving lives at sea with Scarborough RNLI, his passion for the sea, and the pride he has for being part of the RNLI.

They continued by discussing the RNLI200 and celebrations for the RNLI’s bicentenary anniversary, both locally and in the region.

They also included water safety advice for anyone who is interested in or does participate in water sports such as kayaking, surfing and paddle boarding, including what to do if you see someone in difficulty in the water.

Huggy commented: ‘Thank you to Steve and Brydie from Dexter’s for a really good chat. It is important to share water safety advice with our community and visitors. I think some key pieces of advice for anyone visiting the coast are to check the tide times before your trip to the coast, use the nearest RNLI lifeguarded beach, and should you find yourself in difficulty in the water Float to Live.’

Towards the end of the interview, Huggy also volunteers to take on a couple of challenges. One is a surf lesson (with some father and son competition). He also hinted at participating in a swim challenge. Listen to the podcast to find out who he could be up against.

Steve McNamara shared a final thought after the recording: ‘Being located on North Bay, we see the great work the RNLI beach lifeguards provide throughout the summer, and we work in very close cooperation with them as surf school.

'We first met Huggy through his young son's love of surfing and most recently Huggy has been assisting us in the water. We started doing our podcasts to help everyday people who had reservations about surfing overcome their fears.

'Huggy was an obvious choice for one of these podcasts because of his experiences, knowledge of water safety and love of the RNLI. I thought this episode was the most inspiring one to date and I am honoured to have Dexter’s included in Scarborough RNLI’s RNLI200 activities. I hope it encourages people to think about volunteering with the RNLI, helping out in their community to save lives at sea’.
