At 8.32pm on Thursday 18 April 2024, Belfast Coastguard alerted the lifeboat crew after reports of a kitesurfer in difficulty in the water in Barassie Bay, to the north of Troon harbour.

The volunteer crew assembled and RNLI D class inshore lifeboat Sheena was soon launched.

Also attending the scene were other partner emergency services including officers from Police Scotland along with volunteers from the Ayr and Ardrossan Coastguard Rescue Teams.

On arrival it was observed that an experienced kite surfer who was not in difficulty had made their way ashore but in fading light and rain showers, while further enquiries were carried out, a search initiated in case another person was in difficulty in the water.

With a search completed and nothing else found, the inshore lifeboat was able to return to station where it was made ‘ready for service’ with the assistance of the shore crew.

If you see someone in difficulty at sea or on the coast, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard
