Kessock RNLI volunteer on a call-out on the eve his wedding
Inspired as an 8-year-old by watching the lifeboat launch from Flamborough Beach, North Landing Dan Holland went on to be a volunteer crew member at Kessock and more recently producer of the very successful RNLI 200 Voices podcast.
In The Man Behind the Mic, which is available tomorrow 14 February, Dan introduces the episode by reflecting that responding to a call-out on the eve of his wedding meant that the RNLI was always part of the family story.
As an adult he fulfilled his boyhood dream when he volunteered as a crew member at Kessock. In one poignant story Dan tells of administering CPR to a casualty on board the lifeboat after they had been taken from the water. He felt it was not successful and went home dejected only to hear on radio the next morning that the man they rescued had survived. This is the moment that endures.
Dan Holland, along with his business partner in Adventurous Audio produced the RNLI 200 Voices podcast series which has served as a special lead in to 4 March next when the charity celebrates its bicentenary.
One thought that remains with him from the hundreds of hours of interviews is that for RNLI crew there is single focus for a rescue and ‘everything else is left at home when you go to sea.’
That thought is also reflected in Great Scot, another recent episode in which Anne Scott of Buckie RNLI who when she retired from a full-time position at the charity then took on a volunteer role at the station. Speaking for a myriad of staff and volunteers Anne echoes to thoughts of RNLI as ‘family.’
Coming up on Monday next 19 February Broughty Ferry crew member Ben Thomson tells how the experience of been rescued by the RNLI inspired him to become a crew member.
Available across all podcast platforms and the RNLI’s website, listeners can hear this episode and others from survivors, supporters, volunteers, lifeguards, celebrity ambassadors, historians and many more from across Wales, England, Scotland Ireland and beyond.
