Broughty Ferry RNLI launch to reports of swimmer in difficulty near St Andrews
On Monday 3 June, Broughty Ferry RNLI lifeboat was tasked by HM Coastguard to reports of a swimmer in difficulty near East Sands, St Andrews.
The volunteer crew at Broughty Ferry RNLI launched both lifeboats shortly after 8pm and carried out an extensive search of the area alongside Rescue Helicopter 199 from Prestwick and a fixed wing Coastguard plane from Humberside.
In addition, the team were supported by mobile Coastguard units and Police Scotland on the shoreline.
However, at 2:30am the search was called off and identified as a false alarm with good intent. The Broughty Ferry RNLI lifeboats returned to the station just after 1am.
Peter Hay, Coxswain at Broughty Ferry RNLI Lifeboat Station, says: ‘I would like to commend the volunteer crew at Broughty Ferry RNLI for their efficient response to this call-out.
‘This shout was a false alarm with good intent. We would encourage everyone to report any concerns they have by calling 999 and asking the Coastguard. We’re on call 24/7, 365 days a year.’
