Rock volunteer lifeboat crew training with Rescue 924 in the Camel Estuary.

Following a review of rescues in the Camel Estuary by Padstow Harbour, The RNLI, Falmouth Coastguard and many local commercial marine operators in 1994, it was concluded there should be a lifeboat station in Rock.

Our first boat arrived on station 30 years ago on the 4th March. This coincides with the RNLI's 200th celebration, more information on our 200th celebration can be found on the RNLI's website: www.rnli.org

The boat arrived one month after the founding volunteer crew signed up and intensive training sessions then commenced. During the station's first year of service the boat was called out 35 times, saving the lives of 17 persons and assisted many others to safety. Since then the station has played a central role in saving lives at sea on the North Coast of Cornwall.

The station has had three boats all very generously donated by individuals,

The Dolly Holloway, Rusper and Rusper II. Our launch vehicle was also kindly donated and is still in service.

Bryan Bartlett, one of the stations founding volunteer crew members and now training officer said:

'It has been an absolute pleasure being part of Rock RNLI lifeboat station, helping the charity that saves lives at sea over the years. It has provided many happy memories and I look forward to many more.'

The RNLI is the Charity that saves lives at sea and relies on public donations to carry out our lifesaving work.

Notes to editor
The RNLI is the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.
Rock RNLI is located at The Dinghy Park, Rock, Cornwall PL27 6LD. The lifeboat station was founded in 1998 and the volunteer crew use their D-Class lifeboat Rusper II.
