Members of the PROBUS club of retired professional and businesspersons had visited Lyme Regis RNLI lifeboat station in November 2023 where they were shown the Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat Spirit of Loch Fyne, its launch tractor and other rescue equipment by station volunteers. It was after this visit that club members decided to donate £800 to the lifesaving charity, money which had been raised from raffles at club events.

Lyme Regis RNLI volunteer water safety officer Nick Marks joined PROBUS members at their lunch on 28 February to speak to the group about the activities of the RNLI in Lyme Regis covering the inshore lifeboat crew, RNLI lifeguards, the charity’s supporters' group and the Lyme Regis water safety team. As he accepted the PROBUS donation he said,

‘On behalf of Lyme Regis RNLI I am very pleased to accept this generous donation from PROBUS. Our charity depends on donations such as this to fund the equipment and training our volunteers need to deliver the 24/7 lifesaving service in Lyme Regis.’

Crewkerne PROBUS Branch president Irvin Johns said,

‘Club members enjoyed the visit to Lyme Regis where we were warmly welcomed by RNLI volunteers who showed us around the station and described how rescues were carried out. As an organisation we are not normally involved in fundraising but made an exception for the ‘charity which saves lives at sea’. We felt this was particularly important in 2024, the year in which the RNLI celebrates its 200th anniversary.’
