RNLI lifesaving mums celebrate Mother’s Day in Scotland

At Kinghorn RNLI, volunteer crew member, Megan, will be celebrating her first Mother’s Day after welcoming her baby girl, Ella, in December 2023.

Megan follows in the footsteps of her mother, Liz, who has been saving lives at sea for 27 years at Kinghorn RNLI. Last year, Liz became the second woman to become an Operations Manager at Kinghorn RNLI Lifeboat Station.

Megan joined Kinghorn RNLI when she was in her sixth year of high school, and now balances being a mother with her work and training to become a helm on the lifeboat.

Since she joined, Megan has been involved in 148 launces, saving 8 lives, and helping 69 others. She is currently shore-based until her daughter is six months but has admitted she would love for her daughter to grow up and join the crew.

In Largs, Jessica is a volunteer RNLI crew member at the local lifeboat station and will be celebrating her second Mother’s Day after welcoming Freyja in February last year.

At Anstruther RNLI, volunteer lifeboat crew member, Nicole Fleming, will also be celebrating her second Mother’s Day. In her day job, Nicole works as a police officer, but she began volunteering in 2016 at Anstruther RNLI.

Nicole first started helping at RNLI fundraising events, then signed up as shore crew and after one year, she is crew on the Mersey class and D class lifeboats at Anstruther RNLI.

In September 2022, Nicole and her partner Steven welcomed twin baby girls, Maeve and Marcie. Even with twins Louise is committed to her volunteer role.

She wants to inspire other mums who want to begin volunteering. She says: ‘Being a mum shouldn’t stop you! ‘Do it! It’s so rewarding, and my lifeboat family provide such great support.’

She continues: ‘Volunteering with the RNLI has definitely changed since I gave birth, but I am so lucky to have my partner and amazing mum on hand.’

This year Lewis Galloway is raising funds through a charity boxing match in April, with all donations going to the RNLI after he was inspired to take on the challenge when his mum was rescued by the RNLI.

Lewis’ mum was paddleboarding near Kingsbarns last summer when she got into difficulty and was thankfully rescued by Anstruther RNLI.

Lewis says: ‘The charity I chose is the RNLI after they saved my mum last year when she was getting swept out in the North Sea. The least I can do is try raise some money for these amazing people.’
