Following a celebratory church service at St Saviour's Church in Walmer last Sunday, volunteers from across the station, their friends, family, and members of the Deal Coastguard continued their celebrations by undertaking a 300 mile cycle, row and walk/run at the Undercroft at Deal Town Hall today, 9 March. The 300 mile target was chosen to celebrate the 238 lifeboat stations around the coast of the UK and Ireland, and the 62 volunteers at the station. In all, participants completed 194.55 miles on the bike, 73.06 miles on the rower and 72.10 miles running/walking between 7.00am and 5.00pm, a total of 339.71miles.

The morning also saw the arrival of the charity’s Connecting our Communities scroll which was signed by Operations Manager Denis Brophy and helm Dan Sinclair. It will continue its journey around all 238 lifeboat stations as well as lifeguard units and fundraising branches, finishing in October in the birthplace of William Hillary, the founder of the RNLI on the Isle of Man. The scroll will then be on display at the RNLI College in Poole.

The Operations Manager said: 'This scroll will be the lasting legacy of current lifeboat volunteers around the coast of the UK and Ireland. It will serve as a reminder to future generations of lifesavers of the dedication and commitment of the charity’s 2024 volunteers.’
