Fowey RNLI lifeboat launches to rescue stranded Bob the dog

Lifeboats News Release

On March 29 the coastguard requested that the Fowey lifeboat launch at 4.40pm to assist with the rescue of a dog that had fallen from the cliffs near Port Mellon and become stranded on the rocks below.

Although the dog was stranded at the bottom of cliffs, which would normally require the inshore lifeboat, the decision was taken not to launch the inshore lifeboat due to the prevailing wind and sea conditions, so the volunteer crew launched the all-weather lifeboat instead. The Mevagissey Coast Rescue Team were in attendance at the top of the cliffs but were unable to reach the dog.

Once on scene the volunteer crew prepared the inflatable XP boat that is carried onboard the all-weather lifeboat and this was launched. Crew members Callum Pritchard and Amelia Luck took the XP boat to the base of the cliffs where they were greeted by a friendly dog called Bob. Thankfully Bob was uninjured and able to board the XP boat. Callum and Amelia took Bob to Port Mellon beach where he was handed over to the waiting coastguard team and safely reunited with his owner.

When walking dogs near cliff edges always take great care. Keep your dog on a lead if you’re close to cliff edges. Always take a means of calling for help and if your dog gets into difficulties call 999 and ask for the coastguard.
