The volunteer lifeboat crew were requested to launch their Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat on Saturday (4 May) at 5.47pm, to take part in a multi-agency rescue, following reports of two people onboard a 5-metre pleasure craft, which had suffered engine failure and ended up aground on the rocks near Goat Island beach in Youghal Bay area. Helmed by Jason Ansbro alongside crew members Jason Innes, Joe O Connor and Ivan Bryan, the lifeboat arrived on scene approximately 10 minutes later in favourable weather conditions and a falling tide.

Shortly after arriving at the location, two lifeboat volunteer crew members entered the water and swam ashore to the boat which was high and dry on the rocks. They observed that the two men onboard, who were both wearing lifejackets, were safe and well and did not require any medial assistance.

A decision was made that due to the position of the boat, the casualties should be airlifted to safety by Rescue 117 and handed over to Ardmore Coast Guard, who were waiting close-by. Before leaving the scene, the lifeboat crew secured the casualty boat, which had to be left at the scene.

At 6.50pm the Lifeboat was stood down and returned to the station where it was recovered and fuelled up and ready for the next service.

Speaking after the call out Youghal RNLI Launching Authority Mark Nolan said; ‘Always wear a lifejacket and carry a means of communion, which was what owed to the success of this rescue. If in trouble call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.
