The course, which took place last month, involved eight three-hour sessions over two weeks and trained crew and helms in advanced first aid techniques. Sessions included resuscitation, the treatment of wounds, fractures and other injuries, and the provision of appropriate medication for a range of circumstances.

The 100 per cent pass rate for Littlehampton RNLI means that everyone who took the course – either for the first time or for their three-year revalidation – are qualified to assess a casualty and provide appropriate care and treatment during an incident and on the return passage to shore.

Jason Collins, Littlehampton RNLI volunteer crew member, completed the course. He said: ‘The course provides us with both knowledge and practice for situations that we may encounter when assisting casualties at sea. It is important that, as a crew, we are prepared to ensure we can support any casualties who we are called out to. The course is quite intensive, as there is a lot of content, but it is also fun – involving scenarios and practical use of equipment. It is fantastic that we all completed it.’

Nick White, Littlehampton RNLI’s Lifeboat Operations Manager, added: ‘I would like to congratulate our crew and thank them for their great commitment in attending and passing each session. The RNLI’s casualty care course is intensive, and everyone gave their time in addition to our regular twice-weekly training and on-demand operational launches. Well done, everyone.’

The 20 successful volunteer crew were: Adam Grummett, Andy Harris, Andy Hicks, Bea Homer, George Denny, Ivan Greer, Jason Collins, Josh Fenton, Lee Cullen, Mark Nicholls, Matt Newton, Mike Hayes, Richard Howlett, Richard Winstanley, Rob Devo, Ross Shipway, Simone Spencer, Steve Howlett, Steve Marner and Warren Marden.
