Tobermory celebrates RNLI 200 with drama, music and film this weekend
There is something for everyone as Tobermory celebrates the RNLI's bicentenary this weekend, including drama, music, films and an opportunity to explore the lifeboat and meet the crew.
This coming weekend promises to be a busy one in Tobermory with a series of events to mark the RNLI's 200th anniversary. The weekend opens with a performance of 'World Beyond Man' a play written by Stephanie Dale and performed by the Tobermory Troubadours at the Western Isles Hotel on Friday night at 1830 and 2000. Admission is by donation to the RNLI with tickets available at Tackle and Books and Browns.
Saturday sees local choir Natural Voices and friends 'sing to save lives at sea' with a nautically themed concert at Mull Theatre starting at 1930. Tickets are available at antobarandmulltheatre.co.uk with all proceeds going to the RNLI.
On Sunday, Tobermory RNLI's volunteer crew will welcome locals and visitors on board their Severn class all weather lifeboat which will be berthed alongside the pontoons at Tobermory Harbour.
Also on Sunday, Mull Film Club will round off the RNLI celebration weekend on Sunday 26th May, with drop-in screenings at Aros Hall from 1500, and an evening double-bill of boat-related docs. At 1730, Mull Film Club will screen 'Launch! On The Sea With Scotland's Lifeboats' by award-winning curator Shona Thomson, featuring archive footage of Scotland’s RNLI lifeboat crews, including Tobermory footage from 1939 and more recent film. The screening will be followed by a short Q&A with some of the Tobermory lifeboat crew, then a showing of 'It'll Never Work' by Joe Osborn.

The RNLI charity saves lives at sea. Its volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue service around the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland coasts. The RNLI operates 238 lifeboat stations in the UK and Ireland and more than 240 lifeguard units on beaches around the UK and Channel Islands. The RNLI is independent of Coastguard and government and depends on voluntary donations and legacies to maintain its rescue service. Since the RNLI was founded in 1824, its lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved over 142,700 lives.
