Scarborough RNLI welcomes 100 year old supporter and fundraiser to the station
Betty Acklam visited Scarborough RNLI lifeboat station yesterday (Thursday 23 May 2024) meeting several of the crew.
When Betty arrived at the station yesterday morning, she brought with her several photos and the award she got for being the top fundraiser in 2004 which she was eager to share with crew. Betty also showed crew the card she had recently received from HRH King Charles and Queen Camilla. King Charles is also the patron of the RNLI.
Scarborough Lifeboat Operations Manager, Roger Buxton and Chairman Colin Woodhead greeted Betty and her family with several of the Scarborough crew and proceeded to present her with a birthday cake and flowers.
Roger Buxton, volunteer Lifeboat Operations Manager at Scarborough RNLI, said: ‘It was a pleasure to show Betty the lifeboat and station. All the crew wish her a very happy 100th birthday.
‘It was great to talk to her about her memories of the Scarborough lifeboat station and learn more about the history of the station.
‘As a charity we rely on the generosity of the public and people like Betty raising the funds that allow us to be there when we’re needed most saving lives at sea.’
The RNLI has revealed its lifeboats launched more than 9,100 times in 2023. Funds raised will help support the charity’s vital lifesaving work, including the provision of important training and kit for volunteer lifeboat crews who readily respond to emergency calls and go to sea to save others whenever the call for help comes in.
