A rescue by Kirkcudbright Lifeboat today was the culmination of a very busy week for the station's volunteer crew.
The Atlantic 85 Sheila Stenhouse was launched today at 3.20pm to go to the aid of a kayaker near Isle of Whithorn Harbour. When the lifeboat arrived the kayaker had just been picked up by another vessel, however the lifeboat recovered the kayak and escorted the second vessel to the Isle of Whithorn, landing the kayak. The kayaker expressed their thanks to the crew.
Incredibly, almost all of today’s shore and boat crew had earlier in the week, along with their partners, attended the RNLI Garden Party at Buckingham Palace, in the presence of HRH Princess Royal and RNLI President The Duke of Kent.
With over 120 years of service between today’s crew, which included John on Shore Crew with Robert, Ian, and Martin on the lifeboat. Completed with Mike also on Shore Crew and Martin’s son Lewis the final lifeboat Crew Member.
Earlier this weekend the fundraising branch of Kirkcudbright Lifeboat Station also made its mark, when newest station recruit Jack Finlay raised over £2500 by running the local half marathon in a time of 1hr 49mins.
Lifeboat Operations Manager, John Collins said: 'This has been a great week for Kirkcudbright RNLI with volunteers being recognised for the length of their commitment to the lifesaving charity.
'The great fundraising achievement by Jack highlights the fact that the RNLI is powered by donations from generous supporters and voluntary contributions. With a volunteer crew who selflessly give up their time to save lives at sea.'

The RNLI operates 238 lifeboat stations in the UK and Ireland and more than 240 lifeguard units on beaches around the UK and Channel Islands. The RNLI is independent of Coastguard and government and depends on voluntary donations and legacies to maintain its rescue service. Since the RNLI was founded in 1824, its lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved over 142,700 lives.
