RNLI funds boosted by ‘Pier to Pier’ walkers

Roy Elmes and Daughter Lisa Smith had elected to boost RNLI funds by walking from the pier at Weston-Super-mare to Burnham-on-Sea Pavilion, which is on record as the shortest pier in England, a distance of approximately 9.8 miles.

Their walk was organized for last Saturday 25th May. With the warm sunny weather on their side and a cooling coastal breeze they arrived on schedule at around 1.00pm. On hand to welcome them, were Fundraising Chair Denise Gocher and treasurer Jan Pearce, plus station Lifeboat Press Officer Mike Lang, with an invitation to visit Burnham lifeboat station for tea, biscuits, and a short rest whilst being treated to a brief introduction to the Station lifeboats and launching tractors etc. Both Roy and Lisa were presented with fundraising medals as a symbol of thanks for their support of the RNLI's life-saving lives at sea core values.

The RNLI charity saves lives at sea. Its volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue service around the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland coasts. The RNLI operates 238 lifeboat stations in the UK and Ireland and more than 240 lifeguard units on beaches around the UK and Channel Islands. The RNLI is independent of Coastguard and government and depends on voluntary donations and legacies to maintain its rescue service. Since the RNLI was founded in 1824, its lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved over 142,700 lives.
