Your Launch a Memory Whitby updates

Thank you for remembering your loved one by adding their name to the Whitby lifeboat. Welcome to your updates page, where you can keep track of the lifeboat’s progress.

1. Welcome home Lois-Ivan

Our Whitby all-weather Shannon class arrived in glorious sunlight on 11th June 2023, receiving an emotional welcome from volunteers and the local community after a 3 ½ day-long voyage from our All-weather Lifeboat Centre in Poole.

Regrettably, we couldn't promote the event or encourage visiting the station in Whitby due to capacity limitations for supporters, however you can watch the video to see the arrival of the lifeboat.

After three months of intensive training on the new lifeboat the Shannon was made the operational lifeboat and it was time to say goodbye to the Trent class.

2. Post event update

We were absolutely thrilled to have the privilege of hosting many of you at the All-weather Lifeboat Centre in Poole to catch a glimpse of the incredible Whitby lifeboat. The event weekends on 20th-21st May and 3rd-4th June were joyous occasions, and we felt truly honoured to meet so many of you and listen to the heart-warming stories you shared about your loved ones.

If you couldn't make it to the event, don't worry! We made sure to capture all the excitement in a short video, and we're excited to share it with you. It's a delightful recap of the unforgettable moments we experienced together. Launch a Memory is a very special campaign, with extra special supporters and we look forward to your lifeboat arriving on station in summer this year.

3. Ringing the bell for Whitby’s new Shannon

The RNLI celebrated the completion of the Shannon class lifeboat on 4th April. RNLB Lois-Ivan, as she will be known, will be heading to Whitby Lifeboat Station in North Yorkshire once remaining sea trials and commissioning have been completed.

Watch our video of the recent bell-ringing ceremony for this special lifeboat at the All-weather Lifeboat Centre in Poole.
