A new Media Policy and an updated Social Media Policy are now available for RNLI volunteers and staff.

They are designed to support and protect all volunteers and staff, while helping everyone to play their part in enhancing and protecting the reputation of the RNLI.

The policies provide guidelines and essential requirements to ensure we achieve consistent, responsible and professional media and social media activity.

If you and your team get involved with media or social media activity as part of your RNLI role, please familiarise yourself with the new policies. They are available in the Policies and Guides section of the Volunteer Zone.

Media Policy

Most of the information in the Media Policy comes from existing policy and guidance which we have brought together in one place, making the information much easier to find and understand.

The policy sets out how RNLI staff and volunteers should work with the media, celebrities and politicians. It also explains how we manage video and images, including consent.

Social Media Policy

The Social Media Policy is an update of the previous version, making it more practical and relevant to the social media landscape of 2024.

It reflects how we now use and get the most out of the different social media platforms, as well as clarifying how we safeguard ourselves and others when using social media.

Support and questions

Please speak to your RNLI manager if you have any questions, or get in touch with [email protected] or [email protected].

The Media Engagement and Social Media Teams are also planning online drop-in sessions to share more information and discuss the policies in more detail – please look out for details very soon.
