Helensburgh's station history

Inshore lifeboat station established in June with D class lifeboat.  The lifeboat was provided by the Helensburgh Ladies Lifeboat Guild.

Atlantic 17 lifeboat sent to station.

D class lifeboat withdrawn.

Atlantic 17 lifeboat withdrawn and replaced with an Atlantic 21 class lifeboat.

Work has been carried out on the construction of a new slipway over the existing slipway in order to provide improved launching and recovery of the lifeboat.

The present boathouse provides very limited crew facilities and is also of insufficient size to accommodate an Atlantic 75 class lifeboat and launching vehicle.  Proposals, in this respect, were therefore drawn up for the construction of a new larger boathouse on the existing site and these were subsequently approved.  Work commenced in November 1996 and was completed in June 1997.  Facilities provided by the new boathouse include, on the ground floor, housing for the lifeboat and launching vehicle.

The new station Atlantic 75, B class lifeboat B791 Gladys Winifred Tiffney was placed on service on 12 December. This lifeboat was funded by a generous bequest of Mrs Gladys Winifred Tiffney.
