Lymington's station history

Inshore lifeboat station established with a D class lifeboat in May.

The D class lifeboat withdrawn and replaced by an Atlantic 21 in August.

A purpose-built boathouse constructed.

Bronze Medal awarded to Helmsman Alan Coster in recognition of his courage, determination and seamanship when he took the lifeboat to a distance of approximately 20 yards from the motor fishing vessel Al Mor which was sinking at the entrance to Lymington river in a southerly gale and rough sea and having swum to the fishing vessel, led her crew of two over the marshes for half a mile to rendezvous with the lifeboat resulting in the rescue of two lives on 17 December 1980.

A framed Chairman's letter of thanks awarded to Helmsman Alan Coster and crew member Michael Crowe in recognition of the service on 29 May, when a 28 foot Contessa class yacht was in difficulties off the south west area of the Shingles Bank, whilst on passage between Poole and Chichester.  Crew member Nicholas Hayward and the helicopter crew also involved in this service received letters of appreciation signed by the Director.

A first floor extension to the boathouse was recently completed to provide improved crew facilities and a souvenir sales outlet.

The new station Atlantic 75 class lifeboat B-784 Victor “Danny” Lovelock was placed on service. This lifeboat was funded by Mrs Iris Lovelock.

The Thanks of the Institution inscribed on Vellum accorded to Helmsman Nicolas Hayward for saving the crew of three and the yacht Piciess on 9 September 2002. The Atlantic class lifeboat was operating at the very limit of her capabilities in a Force 8/9 Gale, torrential rain and very rough seas. His three crew members: Barry Down, Robin Mursell and Austin Honeysett each received A Framed Letter of Thanks signed by the Chairman of the Institution.

New inshore lifeboathouse completed on 6 July at a cost of £678,284.

Following the visit on Wednesday 9 November 2011 by the Coast Review delegation, led by Rear Admiral John Tolhurst, it was agreed by the Operations Committee on 21 March 2012 and resolved by the Trustee Board at their meeting on 4 April 2012 that there be no change to the lifeboat cover provided by Lymington Lifeboat Station.
