Oban's station history
1972
Inshore lifeboat station established in 22 May with the placing on service of an 18ft McLachlan lifeboat.
1978
All weather lifeboat sent to station on 8 August.
1982
The 18ft McLachlan lifeboat.
All weather lifeboat withdrawn and replaced with an Intermediate class lifeboat.
1985
The Thanks of the Institution inscribed on Vellum accorded to Coxswain/Mechanic John Patrick Maclean in recognition of the skill and judgement he displayed when the lifeboat rescued the crew of eight from the fishing vessel Shemara which had stranded on Lady’s Rock off Lismore in a westerly gale and a rough sea on 31 January.
1997
A new station Trent class lifeboat ON1227 Mora Edith Macdonald was placed on service on 17 July. The lifeboat was funded by the Bequest of Miss M E MacDonald together with the bequest of His Grace The Duke of Atholl and other gifts and legacies. The Intermediate class lifeboat has been withdrawn.
For services to the RNLI Her Majesty The Queen in her Birthday Honours has honoured former coxswain Patrick Maclean. The award is Member, Order of the British Empire (MBE).
1998
Improved crew facilities completed in November.
2001
A Framed Letter of Thanks signed by the Chairman of the Institution, Mr Peter Nicholson awarded to crew member Ronnie MacKillop for entering the water to assist a man who had fallen between two moored trawlers in the early hours of 16 April 2001. He swam and towed the unconscious man around the bows of one trawler and got him to the lifeboat where he was pulled aboard.
2002
For services to the RNLI Her Majesty The Queen in her Birthday Honours has honoured former Honorary Secretary Norman Macleod. The award is Member, Order of the British Empire (MBE).
2005
A Framed Letter of Thanks signed by the Chairman of the Institution, Admiral Sir Jock Slater awarded to Coxswain Ronnie MacKillop and Third Mechanic Peter MacKinnon for saving the crew of three from the Ferro cement ketch Classic Wave when engine failure drove her aground onto a rocky shelf in a south westerly force 5/6 wind, spring tides, driving rain and poor visibility on 17 September 2005.
2009
3 August the Oban relief All weather lifeboat ON1226 Edward Duke of Windsor, was transferring a pregnant lady and a Midwife from the Isle of Mull to take them to Oban. 5 minutes from arriving at Oban the 9lb 4oz baby boy was born. Mother and baby were both well and were subsequently transferred to hospital.
