West Mersea's station history

1963

Inshore lifeboat station established in July with the placing on service of a D class lifeboat. The lifeboat is kept in a shelter adjacent to the Yacht Club.

1972

D class lifeboat withdrawn and replaced with an Atlantic 21 lifeboat.

1978

The Thanks of the Institution inscribed on Vellum accorded to Helmsman Graham M Knott, in recognition of the skill and seamanship he displayed when the Atlantic 21 lifeboat rescued the crew of four of the sloop Blackbird which was aground at Sales Point in a north easterly gale and a rough sea on 31 July.

1979

The Thanks of the Institution inscribed on Vellum accorded to Helmsman James Albert Clarke, in recognition of his skill and seamanship when the Atlantic 21 lifeboat gave assistance to 10 small craft in difficulties in the River Blackwater estuary in a southerly storm and steep breaking seas on 26 May. Crew member Jonathan Paul French was also accorded the Thanks of the Institution inscribed on Vellum in recognition of his commendable action when he jumped into the sea to search under one of the craft to see if anyone had been trapped.

1991-1992

A new boathouse and slipway constructed 200 metres north west of the old boathouse. As well as housing the station's Atlantic 21 lifeboat and a new launching and recovery winch, it includes a crewroom and galley, souvenir outlet and toilet facilities.

1992

HRH The Duke of Kent, KG officially opened the new lifeboathouse on 10 September.

1993

Framed Chairman's Letters of Thanks presented to Helmsman John Frost and crew members Matthew Haward and Javis Wenlock in recognition of their fine efforts and devotion to duty when in the lifeboat they gave assistance to five yachts, two motor cruisers and a man stranded on Osea Island in a Force 10 Gale on 30 August 1992.

2001

New Atlantic 75, B class lifeboat, B761 Dignity was placed on service 1 June 2001 funded by Dignity Caring Funeral Services.

2014

The new Atlantic 75 lifeboat B-879 was placed on service on 21 October 2014. Lifeboat B-761 Dignity has been withdrawn.
