Lifeboatman runs marathon

Former Royal Navy man and now Penlee Lifeboat mechanic Tony Rendle will again run the London Marathon, he’s already taken the punishment having run the marathon before.

On the last occasion he took 5hrs15mins (twisted ankle at 15 miles last 11 were emotional) raising nearly £2500 for the RNLI, plus two half marathons at Plymouth and Oxford

This time Tony hopes to break 4hrs 45mins for his London Marathon and should be on target with 650 kilometres road running so far.

The lifeboatman joined the Royal Navy from school at HMS Raleigh and joined the staff at Britannia Royal Naval College where it just happens his father and grandfather both worked as civilians.

He went on to become an aircraft engineer mechanic and spent his last 19 years mainly based on RNAS Culdrose squadrons just across Mount’s Bay from the RNLI’s Penlee Lifeboat Station.

Tony has spent 20 years with the RNLI, 10yrs as a volunteer signing up in 2004 and as a full time mechanic for 10yrs. Apart from a short stint with Dart Lifeboat Station he has been at Penlee.

Of his time with the RNLI Tony said “it’s great to be running London again for the RNLI especially in the RNLI’s 200th year”
