Captain Humble's box

There is never much space onboard a ship. Things need to be stored carefully. This box belonged to Captain Humble, the captain of the SS Forfarshire. Captain Humble and his wife died in the shipwreck. The box was found after the incident and was returned to Captain Humble’s sister.

This box has three vertical compartments covered in blue velvet. They would have been used for storing personal items. The velvet would have provided padding to the items in the box so that they weren’t damaged by the continual movement of the ship.

Grace Darling in 10 objects

The RNLI Grace Darling Museum can’t portray the world in 100 objects; but we can give you more information about the life of one of its most celebrated heroines by focusing on the details of 10 different objects on display in the museum.

These pages help you to explore parts of the collection that you can’t easily see in the displays. Click through to see all the objects.
