Most people keep photos of their relatives close by. This locket contains photographs of Grace’s father William Darling and her brother Robert.
When Grace died in 1842, photography was a very new art. There is no photograph of Grace Darling. In fact, the photo of William Darling was probably not taken until 1860, 20 years after Grace died. So, the locket was probably owned by Grace’s sister Thomasin. Grace might have used the locket to keep curls of hair in, a common way of remembering people in Victorian times.
